The Iron Blow by Anthony Parsons

CURRENT FINAL YEAR

LOCATION:  Queenstown, Tasmania

The Iron Blow is a destination where humans momentarily inhabit to prepare their journeys into outer space. While occupying this place, one enters a process of examination, conditioning, fitting and simulation. Throughout this process the human experiences the fundamental barriers that outer space travel face, including the physical, psychological and temporal constraints the universe holds against the human race.

This phase in the human’s journey is located in an abandoned copper mine in the West Coast ranges of Tasmania, and is a place of environmental temporal decay as a result of damaging human consumption. The buildings inserted in the Iron Blow reflect this decay, reacting to the harsh and desolate environment the entire site faces. The buildings ultimately enter a heterotopic state, becoming beautiful useless ruins which mimic the damaged beauty of the entire site.
