PROJECT LOCATION: Newcastle, Australia
Cathedral Park Maternity Hospital & Gardens is an investigation into the social dilemmas surrounding child birth and the spaces in which it occurs.
An architectural intervention is proposed within the heart of Newcastle’s CBD which stirs a cultural, political and spiritual debate regarding the contemporary spaces and facilities provided to women for the processes of giving birth.
The building takes its position on a historically and spiritually significant site within Newcastle sharing its grounds with the city’s Christ Church Cathedral.
A holistic program is focused on education, support and a freedom of choice for the child bearing mother whilst welcoming the stranger onto the site through public food gardens and health facilities.
