PROJECT LOCATION: Hannell Street, Newcastle
Newcastle has long withdrawn its negotiation with the harbour; existing foreshore development strategies have stripped the city of a dialogue with its industrial past. The site at the western edge of the city presents a typical example of this situation where the introduced physical and lost natural networks are in need of repair.
The proposed Newcastle School of Arts questions the recent modernist trends of harbourfront development. The building is a spatial reinterpretation of Newcastle’s urban environment, suggesting an architectural intervention that reconnects the city to the harbour, and explores creative production as a revitalisation alternative to recent commercially driven attempts.
