Newcastle Civic Market by Kian San Lam

CURRENT FINAL YEAR

LOCATION: Newcastle, Australia

This project is working on the vision for a representative market in Newcastle. Public market has a long history, until now it still not been replaced by department stores or supermarkets. Perhaps it has become part of the culture of city life.

Every city in Australia has a representative market, like the Queens Victoria Market in Melbourne and The Rocks Markets in Sydney. However, Newcastle is the second oldest city in Australia and yet there is no market to represent it.

The biggest market in Newcastle is The Newcastle City Farmers Market; it is located in Broadmeadow Show Ground. The original site of the farmers market was in the city central; however the site becomes the new house for Newcastle Museum. The farmers market should be again relocate into city centre and become the economic and social centre of the city.
