PROJECT LOCATION: Newcastle, Australia
The Living Library project is a response to the questions being asked about the future of Newcastle’s identity and the potential reinvention of the library typology within contemporary society. The dismantling of the historic BHP steelworks signified an end to Newcastle’s identity as an industrial city.
Newcastle is now faced with an opportunity to reshape it’s identity and engage in the new industry of the information age. In response to this , the Living Library creates a new central city precinct that generates heightened knowledge / information based activity. The library operates around the production and consumption of new knowledge and research, therefore generating knowledge-based industry.
Much like the agora in ancient Ephesus, the Living Library integrates a mix of key infrastructure with the library, research centre, retail, marketplace and housing.
