PROJECT LOCATION: Newcastle, Australia
This project responds to the condition in Newcastle which sees the neglect of the city in favour of outer commercial developments. The future of the library is explored, a building formally based on the collection and storage of books.
The proposal sets out to provide an alternative place of information exchange, one where the senses are reunited through the combined use of digital technologies, art, dance and storytelling. The design facilitates unexpected views and encounters evoking the experience of delight. The program includes learning spaces, artist studios, galleries, music and dance spaces. Intermediate accommodation is also provided for people who have had mental health problems as a means of assisting in community integration and is part of the wider idea of deconstructing barriers.
