PROJECT LOCATION: Hunter St, Newcastle
The Newcastle Idea Store is located at the centre of Newcastle civic and education precinct at the junction of Hunter Street and Auckland Street. The library focuses on informal public and community interactions by reconnecting and gathering users by being more than a library. The library is multifunctional by incorporating community centre, childcare centre and exhibition gallery “softly” instead of books as the nucleus.
The ‘open shelve’ concept allows access of information through centralised book collection areas that are anchored at the foreground to engage the public and show the relationships between all of the spaces in the library. A large natural light-filled atrium circles the perimeter bookshelves core which highlights the important bookshelves. The public spaces include a public park, open theatre and open plazas which continue the axis of Christie Park and direct users to the library.
