PROJECT LOCATION: Laman Street, Newcastle
The redevelopment of Newcastle Region Art Gallery aims at bringing people closer to the gallery, learn and appreciate visual arts and aspires at becoming the cultural centre at the heart of the city of Newcastle. It’s location at the civic and cultural precinct in the city centre, at the gateway of one of the most active streets in Newcastle promising a continuous of visitors to the gallery. The redevelopment project expands the existing gallery spaces, storage facilities, administrative spaces, and adding new spaces such as cafe, bookshop, and facilities for community program such as classroom and art workshop.
Cafe, souvenir and bookshop, and art functions such as classes, seminars and workshops are all located at ground level, to draw in interaction and deliver more intimate relationship between the public and the visual arts. The building fit itself with the axis formed by Darby St. and Queen St and by the interpretation of these grids and the existing building; it generates the geometrical complexity of the gallery.
