Opportunistic Housing, Newcastle Beach
“rampant speculation combined with a severe downturn of natural resource exportation has rendered the once thriving mining sector into obsolescence”.
Newcastle Herald 07/08/2030
The project is an exploration of a new possibility in housing set in a severe economic downturn where local planning regulations, finance conditions and property guidelines are all relaxed.
Over time the project uses infrastructure from near by obsolete bulk carrier ships to create additional housing at the existing Newcastle Beach site.
The project is a critique of current social and economic inequality, which the area imposes on its residents, thus the architecture is informed by what is immediately salvageable.
