School of Creative & Performing Arts by Zalikha Zaidi

The School of Creative and performing arts is an extension to the New Space city campus for the University of Newcastle, Australia in respond to activate the business along Hunter Street and provide the demand for the underutilized playhouse of the civic theatre.

Located in the city precinct of Newcastle, next to Wheeler Place, the project attempts to preserve the historical significance site of the Fred and Ash building and the adjacent buildings, readapting it for a new use and purpose.

The project focus not only on the main spaces and how they interact with another but also the leftover spaces such as circulation and how the students can be creatively stimulated by them. These spaces inhabited not only during class but also in between, before and after class are designed to provoke the emotions of the user through the layout and design that manipulates movement, touch, light and sound.
